FMAS Sponsored Scholarship – Marine Science Summer Camp

Scholarships Available for Marine Science Summer Camps

Five day marine biology camps for boys and girls ages 8-14 will once again be held throughout the summer on Key
Biscayne. At these camps, students will explore the intertidal zone at Bear Cut, learn about dangerous marine
animals, visit the Miami Seaquarium, learn to tag fish for scientific research, and much more.
All camps are directed by Gerard Loisel, who has been teaching marine biology to students of all ages for 47 years.
He taught marine biology and oceanography at Nova Southeastern University for 26 years and was named the NSU
College of Arts and Sciences Teacher of the Year for 2008-2009. He also hosted the PBS television series “Marine
Aquarium World” and in 2020 was featured in a Discovery Science Channel series.
The Key Biscayne Marine Biology Camps will be held on June 11-16, July 10-14, and August 7-11.
All campers must provide their own daily transportation. A limited amount of scholarships to attend these camps
are available. Some of the scholarships are provided by the Florida Marine Aquarium Society. These scholarships
are intended to provide an opportunity for the children of low-income families to attend this camp. In order to
provide as many families as possible the opportunity to send a child, we will limit the scholarships to one per family.
The scholarship will cover 90% of the recipient’s camp costs. The recipient will pay 10% ($25), which will be due 2
weeks after the recipient has been notified that they have been awarded the scholarship. To apply for a camp
scholarship, the following three documents must be submitted:

  • A letter from the child’s teacher containing the child’s name, address, home phone and level of interest
    in marine biology.
  • A documentation of financial need.
  • A letter from a parent or guardian indicating that they are aware that their child is applying for the
scholarship and that they will provide transportation for the child to and from the camp should that child
    be selected.

All documents must be mailed to the following address :
